How much does a tattoo cost?

The price varies depending on the size, complexity, body location, and style of the tattoo. After our initial consultation where we discuss your idea, I'll provide a detailed and personalized quote.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes, a deposit is required to book your appointment. This deposit is deducted from the final tattoo price and guarantees your spot in my schedule. The specific amount will be communicated during the consultation.

How long does a session last?

It depends on the project. Small pieces can be completed in 1-2 hours, while larger work may require multiple sessions of 4-6 hours each. We always prioritize your comfort.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Get a good night's sleep the night before, eat a full meal before arriving, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area.

What aftercare does my tattoo need?

I'll provide detailed aftercare instructions. In general: keep it clean, apply recommended moisturizer, avoid direct sunlight, and don't submerge it in water for 2-3 weeks.

Do you offer free touch-ups?

Yes, I offer a free touch-up within the first 3 months after completing the tattoo, as long as the aftercare instructions have been followed correctly.

Do you work with custom designs?

Absolutely. Every tattoo I create is unique and designed specifically for you. We work together to create a piece that reflects your personal vision and fits perfectly on your body.

How much cheaper are tattoos in Costa Rica compared to the US?

Tattoos in Costa Rica typically cost 30-50% less than comparable work in major US cities like Los Angeles, Miami, or New York. You get world-class realism tattoos at significantly lower prices while enjoying a vacation in Costa Rica. Prices are quoted in USD, and the quality matches or exceeds top US studios.

Is it safe to get a tattoo in Costa Rica as an American?

Yes, getting a tattoo in Costa Rica is safe when you choose a reputable studio. Our studio follows strict hygiene protocols that meet or exceed US standards. We use single-use needles, hospital-grade sterilization, FDA-approved inks, and maintain a clean, professional environment. Costa Rica has strong health regulations for tattoo establishments.

Do I need a visa to travel from the USA to Costa Rica for a tattoo?

No visa is required for US citizens visiting Costa Rica. Americans can stay up to 90 days with just a valid US passport. This makes planning a tattoo trip from the USA simple and straightforward. Most clients combine their tattoo session with a 5-7 day vacation.

How do I fly to Costa Rica from the United States for a tattoo?

Direct flights to San José (SJO airport) are available from most major US cities including Miami (3 hours), Los Angeles (5.5 hours), New York (5 hours), Houston (4 hours), and Atlanta (4 hours). Airlines like United, American, Delta, Southwest, and JetBlue offer daily flights. Our studio is just 20-30 minutes from the airport.

What credit cards do you accept from American clients?

We accept all major US credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. We also accept cash in US dollars, Venmo, Zelle, and bank transfers. There are no international transaction issues, and we can invoice in USD for easy expense tracking.

Can I book a tattoo consultation remotely from the US?

Yes, we offer free remote consultations via WhatsApp, email, or video call for clients in the United States. Send us your tattoo idea, reference images, and placement preferences. We'll discuss the design, provide a quote in USD, and schedule your appointment before you even arrive in Costa Rica.

What's the best time of year for Americans to visit Costa Rica for a tattoo?

December through April is Costa Rica's dry season and the most popular time for American visitors. However, we welcome clients year-round. The rainy season (May-November) offers lower prices and fewer crowds. For tattoo healing, air-conditioned hotels are recommended during any season.

How does tattoo quality in Costa Rica compare to US tattoo shops?

Costa Rica has world-class tattoo artists who match the skill level of top US artists. Rene Ruiz has over 15 years of experience specializing in photorealistic portraits and black & grey realism. Many American clients are amazed by the quality and detail, often saying it exceeds their expectations from US shops.

Can I get a large tattoo piece during a short vacation from the US?

Yes, we accommodate vacation schedules. For larger pieces, we can do extended sessions (6-8 hours) or schedule multiple sessions during your stay. Many American clients complete sleeve work or back pieces during a week-long trip. We'll plan the sessions around your itinerary and healing time.

Is there a language barrier for English-speaking Americans?

No language barrier at all. Rene Ruiz is fluent in English and has worked with thousands of American clients. All consultations, design discussions, and aftercare instructions are provided in English. You'll feel completely comfortable communicating your vision and asking questions.

What should I tell my US doctor about getting a tattoo abroad?

Most US doctors have no concerns about tattoos from reputable Costa Rican studios. Our hygiene standards meet international requirements. If asked, you can share that we use single-use needles, FDA-approved inks, autoclave sterilization, and follow strict sanitation protocols. We provide aftercare documentation if needed.

Can I combine my tattoo appointment with Costa Rica tourist activities?

Absolutely! Many American clients plan adventure activities before their tattoo session, then relax afterward during healing. Popular combinations include visiting Manuel Antonio, Arenal Volcano, or Monteverde before your tattoo, then beach relaxation after. We help you plan the timing to maximize your Costa Rica experience.

How far in advance should I book as a tourist?

For tourists planning a trip to Costa Rica, we recommend reaching out at least 2-4 weeks before your arrival date. This gives us time to discuss your design, prepare the artwork, and secure your appointment slot. For larger pieces requiring multiple sessions, contact us even earlier to plan your schedule.

Do you accept US dollars?

Yes, we accept USD payments as well as credit cards and bank transfers. Pricing can be quoted in US dollars for your convenience. This makes it easy for American and international tourists to plan their budget.

Is your studio near San José airport?

Yes, our studio is located in San José, conveniently accessible from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The studio is approximately 20-30 minutes from the airport depending on traffic, making it easy to schedule appointments around your travel plans.

Can I swim after getting a tattoo in Costa Rica?

You should avoid swimming, ocean water, pools, and hot tubs for at least 2-3 weeks after getting a tattoo. This is especially important in Costa Rica's tropical climate. If you're planning beach activities, schedule your tattoo session at the end of your trip or plan your itinerary to allow proper healing time.

How does the tropical climate affect tattoo healing?

Costa Rica's warm, humid climate requires extra attention during healing. Keep the tattoo clean and dry, avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and follow aftercare instructions carefully. We provide specific guidance for healing in tropical conditions. Air-conditioned environments help during the initial healing period.

What tattoo styles do you specialize in?

Rene Ruiz specializes in realism tattoos, including photorealistic portraits, black and grey realism, and fine line work. He also creates full color tattoos, Japanese-inspired designs, and custom pieces. His signature style is detailed, lifelike realism with exceptional shading and depth.

Rene Ruiz is a professional tattoo artist based in San José, Costa Rica, with over 15 years of experience. He specializes in realism and portrait tattoos, creating photorealistic designs in black and grey as well as full color. He speaks English and Spanish, and has tattooed clients from over 25 countries.

How much does a sleeve tattoo cost in Costa Rica?

Full sleeve tattoos in Costa Rica range from $1,500-4,000+ USD depending on style, detail, and number of sessions required. Half sleeves typically cost $800-2,000 USD. Realism sleeves require more time and detail, so they're at the higher end. This is 30-50% less than comparable work in major US cities.

How long does a portrait tattoo take?

Portrait tattoos typically take 4-8 hours for a medium-sized piece (about 6-8 inches). Larger portraits or those with complex backgrounds may require multiple sessions totaling 10-15+ hours. The time depends on size, level of detail, and whether it's black & grey or full color.

What is the difference between black and grey and color realism?

Black and grey realism uses only black ink diluted to various shades of grey, creating a classic, timeless look that ages exceptionally well. Color realism incorporates full color to replicate photographs exactly. Black and grey is often preferred for portraits, while color realism excels for nature scenes and vibrant subjects.

Do you do cover-up tattoos?

Yes, we specialize in cover-up tattoos. Cover-ups require careful planning to ensure the old tattoo is fully concealed. We'll assess your existing tattoo, discuss design options that work best for coverage, and create a custom piece. Cover-ups typically need to be larger and darker than the original.

What is fine line tattooing?

Fine line tattooing uses a single needle or small needle grouping to create delicate, precise lines. It's ideal for minimalist designs, script, small detailed work, and subtle feminine pieces. Fine line tattoos require an experienced artist to ensure clean, consistent lines that heal well.

Can you tattoo over scars?

Yes, we can tattoo over most healed scars. The scar should be fully healed (usually 1-2 years old) before tattooing. We'll evaluate the scar tissue during consultation, as some scars may require special techniques or design adjustments. Many clients use tattoos to transform scars into beautiful art.

How do I choose the right tattoo size?

The right tattoo size depends on placement, design complexity, and desired detail level. Small tattoos work for simple designs, but detailed work like portraits needs adequate size (minimum 4-6 inches) to maintain clarity over time. During consultation, we'll recommend optimal sizing for your specific design.

What information do I need to provide for a tattoo quote?

To provide an accurate quote, we need: 1) Reference images or description of your desired tattoo, 2) Approximate size in inches, 3) Body placement, 4) Style preference (realism, fine line, etc.), 5) Whether it's black & grey or color. Photos of the body area can also help with placement planning.

How far in advance should I book my tattoo appointment?

For tourists, we recommend booking 2-4 weeks before your Costa Rica trip. This allows time for design development, revisions, and scheduling. For larger pieces requiring multiple sessions, contact us earlier to plan your schedule. Last-minute appointments are sometimes available.

What is included in a tattoo consultation?

Our free consultation includes: discussion of your tattoo idea and vision, design recommendations based on placement and size, review of reference images, style suggestions, pricing estimate, and scheduling. For remote clients, consultations happen via WhatsApp video call or detailed message exchange.

Can I see the design before my appointment?

Yes, we share the custom design before your appointment. For realism work, you'll see the stencil design. We welcome feedback and offer revisions to ensure you're completely happy with the design before we begin tattooing. Design approval is part of our standard process.

What happens if I need to reschedule my appointment?

We understand travel plans can change. Contact us as soon as possible if you need to reschedule. With adequate notice (48+ hours), we can typically move your appointment without losing your deposit. Last-minute cancellations may forfeit the deposit, but we work with clients on a case-by-case basis.
